TERRIER DOGS

      Terrier dogs are a popular group of breeds known for their energetic, confident, and feisty personalities. They were originally bred for hunting and digging out small animals like rodents, foxes, and badgers, which is why many terriers have strong prey drives and are often independent thinkers.

JACK RUSSELL TERRIER

      Jack Russell Terrier They’re such lively little dogs, full of energy and personality. Size Small, typically weighing between 13-17 pounds and standing about 10-15 inches tall. Coat They have short, smooth, or broken (rough) coats. The coat is usually white with black, brown, or tan patches. They're pretty easy to groom but do shed. Build Compact and muscular, they have a sturdy build for their size, reflecting their working dog origins. Energetic and playful Jack Russells are extremely active and need lots of stimulation. They can be a bit of a handful if their energy isn’t channeled properly. Daily exercise is essential, and they tend to have a "let’s go" attitude. Intelligent and curious They're highly trainable but can also be independent and a little stubborn, so consistent, positive reinforcement works best with them. Affectionate Despite their high energy, they love being around people and can be very affectionate with their family. They often bond strongly with their owners. Territorial They tend to be protective of their space and family but can be friendly with others if properly socialized. Prey drive As a breed originally used for hunting, they have a strong prey drive, so they might chase small animals like squirrels, rabbits, or even small pets. Training early on to manage this behavior is  important. Jack Russells need plenty of exercise—think long walks, fetch, or even agility training to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Without enough activity, they may become bored and destructive. They’re smart, but their independent streak means you have to keep training interesting. They excel in activities like agility and obedience trials but can also be quite cheeky if they’re not mentally challenged. Early socialization with other dogs and people is essential to ensure they grow up to be well-rounded and confident. This helps with their sometimes territorial instincts. Jack Russells are generally healthy but can be prone to some health issues Patellar luxation (dislocated kneecaps), Deafness, Eye issues like lens luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (a condition affecting the hip joint). But overall, they’re a robust breed with a lifespan of around 13-16 years. They were made famous by Wishbone, the TV dog who starred in a kids' show where he’d imagine himself in various literary adventures! They’re often depicted as heroic and spunky dogs and that’s pretty true to their real-life nature.

BULL TERRIER

       Bull Terrier! These dogs have a unique look and an equally unique personality. They’re easily recognizable with their egg-shaped head and muscular build, and they definitely have a reputation for being bold and affectionate. Size Bull Terriers are medium-sized dogs, usually weighing between 50-70 pounds and standing around 21-22 inches at the shoulder. Coat They have a short, smooth coat, typically white or with colored markings (like black, brindle, or tri-color). They shed moderately but are pretty low-maintenance in terms of grooming. Build: Bull Terriers are solidly built with a broad chest, thick neck, and strong, muscular body. They have a unique "egg-shaped" head, which is one of the breed’s signature features. Eyes Their eyes are small, dark, and triangular, which gives them a mischievous, determined look. Confident & Bold Bull Terriers are brave, sometimes to the point of being a little stubborn or cheeky. They have a strong personality and tend to be quite independent, so early training is important. Affectionate & Loyal Despite their tough exterior, Bull Terriers are incredibly loyal and affectionate with their family. They form strong bonds with their owners and are known to be good with kids (when properly socialized). They are people-oriented dogs and love being part of the family. Playful & Fun-loving These dogs have a great sense of humor. They love to play, and they tend to keep their playful attitude well into adulthood. Their antics can be endearing, and they often seek attention and interaction. Territorial  Like many terriers, Bull Terriers can be territorial, which is why early socialization with other dogs and people is essential. They might not always get along with other animals, especially if not socialized properly. High-energy They need plenty of physical and mental exercise. Bull Terriers are strong and can be quite determined, so keeping them engaged is key to preventing unwanted behaviors. Exercise Bull Terriers are active and need a good amount of daily exercise—think brisk walks, playtime, or even some agility training. They’re not the type to be couch potatoes! Their energy, if not managed, can lead to them getting into trouble. Training They're intelligent dogs, but their independent nature can make them a challenge to train. Positive reinforcement is the way to go, and consistency is key. Early socialization with other dogs and people will help them become well-adjusted adults. They are eager to please, so training can be a fun and rewarding experience. Socialization Given their sometimes aloof or dominant tendencies, it's important to socialize them from an early age. Proper socialization helps curb any aggressive or overly territorial behaviors and ensures they grow into well-mannered pets. Lifespan Bull Terriers typically live around 10-12 years. Deafness Some Bull Terriers are prone to congenital deafness. Skin issues They can have sensitive skin and might be prone to conditions like allergies and hot spots. The Bull Terrier is often associated with the famous Target store mascot, the bull terrier named Bullseye.

SCOTTISH TERRIER

      Scottish Terrier—aka the Scottie. This little dog is all about dignity, independence, and loyalty with a dash of stubborn sass. With their classic silhouette and bold personality, they’ve been a favorite for decades, even gracing the White House and Monopoly board. Size Small but solid—around 18–22 pounds, 10 inches tall. Coat  A double coat wiry on top with a soft undercoat. Often black, but they can also be wheaten  pale yellow/gold or brindle. Lifespan 12–15 years,  Origin  Scotland no surprise there bred to hunt badgers and foxes. Scotties are smart, but they like to do things their way. They're not always eager to please like some other breeds, which makes training a test of patience and consistency. Once they bond with you, they’re incredibly loyal—but they don’t throw their love around to just anyone. A true Scottie chooses their people carefully. They carry themselves with a certain seriousness. Some owners say they even “strut” when they walk. Scotties make great watchdogs. They’re not aggressive, but they’ll let you know when someone’s around. They’re brave for their size and won't back down from a challenge. Don’t let the short legs fool you—they have that classic terrier spunk. Digging, chasing, and a strong prey drive are baked into their DNA. Moderate. They’re not hyper, but they do need daily walks and mental stimulation—think puzzles or games. They can get bored if left alone too long. They can learn commands quickly but might pretend they didn’t hear you if they’re not in the mood. Training works best with firm but gentle consistency and rewards. That iconic coat needs regular brushing (2–3 times a week) and professional grooming every few months to keep it looking sharp. Don’t forget the beard! Their prey drive is strong. If they spot a squirrel? They're out. So always use a leash unless you’re in a secure area. Fala, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s beloved companion, is probably the most famous Scottie in U.S. history. 

WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER

      West Highland White Terrier  better known as the Westie! These little cloud-like cuties are a total mix of sass, smarts, and sweetness. With their snow-white coats and bright personalities, Westies have won hearts all over the world and they know it. Size Small and sturdy  about 15–20 pounds, 10–11 inches tall. Coat Double coat harsh and straight outer layer with a soft undercoat. Always white. Lifespan 12–16 years, Origin Scotland (like many terriers), bred to hunt rats, foxes, and other small critters. Westies are known for their happy-go-lucky vibe. They’ve got energy, confidence, and aren’t afraid to speak their mind. Unlike some terriers that are a little more reserved, Westies tend to be more sociable good with strangers, and often friendly with other dogs when properly socialized.  They love their people but aren’t overly clingy. They're cool with entertaining themselves but will definitely let you know when it’s time to play. They make great watchdogs they’ll alert you to anything that moves near your home. Squirrels beware. They still have those strong hunting instincts, so secure fences and leashes are a must unless you want to watch your Westie chase a rabbit into the next town. Regular brushing (a few times a week) and professional grooming every couple of months to keep their white coat clean and neat. They don’t shed heavily, but their coat can trap dirt easily. Westies are energetic, so daily walks and some playtime are necessary to keep them content and out of trouble. They’re smart and usually eager to learn, but they’ve got a little stubborn streak (classic terrier). Keep training fun and positive, and they’ll shine. Skin issues Westie Itch They can be prone to allergies and skin conditions like atopic dermatitis. Patellar luxation (kneecap dislocation), Addison’s disease, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (affects the hip joint). The Westie’s all-white color was intentionally bred legend says a Scottish hunter accidentally shot his brown terrier thinking it was a fox, and vowed to only breed white dogs from then on for better visibility.
